Premier Medical Physicians Now Offer Inspire® Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Médico de primera ear, nose and throat physicians Kacie R. Oglesby y Christopher G. Weeks are now offering Inspire® therapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).  Inspire therapy is a long-term, mask-free1 solution for people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who are unable to benefit from CPAP.

The latest generation of Inspire therapy, the Inspire V™ System, is an innovative advancement in Inspire therapy, designed for a more simplified procedure.2-3 With a new integrated respiratory sensor, the Inspire V System eliminates the need for physicians to place a separate sensing lead and instead allows for respiratory sensing to occur inside of the implant.

OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea which affects nearly one billion people in the world, and there are an estimated 54 million people with OSA in the United States alone, including approximately 24 million people with moderate to severe OSA.4

OSA occurs when the tongue relaxes back into your airway during sleep, causing your airway to be blocked.  When your airway is blocked, your body triggers you to wake up and gasp for air. When you have OSA, this cycle happens repeatedly, preventing you from getting the quality sleep you need.  People with OSA may also be at a higher risk for serious health concerns if left untreated like type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart attack, depression and a shortened life span.5-6

OSA therapies like CPAP use a mask and hose to force air through your airway. Inspire therapy works comfortably7 inside your body and syncs with your natural breathing pattern.  It uses gentle pulses to move your tongue forward to keep your airway open. This enables you to breathe regularly and sleep better.  You simply use the small handheld Inspire™ remote to turn your therapy on when you’re ready to sleep. No mask or hose needed.

Inspire therapy has a proven safety record with 99.6% of Inspire implant procedures being successfully completed without any major complications7 and 93% of patients recommend the therapy to a friend or family member.9

“In our practice we see many patients who are unable to tolerate CPAP.  Inspire therapy represents a proven advancement in treating sleep apnea,” said Dr. Weeks.  “It is clinically proven to reduce sleep apnea events, has a high level of patient satisfaction and a high therapy adherence. We are excited to be able to offer this therapy to patients as an option in treating their sleep apnea,” added Dr. Oglesby.

Inspire is not for everyone. It is a surgically implanted system that is intended to treat obstructive sleep apnea in patients who are not effectively treated by, or able to tolerate CPAP. Talk to your doctors about risks, benefits and expectations associated with Inspire. Risks associated with the surgical implant procedure may include infection and temporary tongue weakness. In rare cases tongue paresis and atrophy may occur. Some patients may require post implant adjustments to the system’s settings in order to improve effectiveness and ease any initial discomfort they may experience.
